Take a walk on the “Short Side”
The morning sky often determines where I will take my daily walk with my dog, Copper. Foggy days lead us to the wooded trails above the Steeplechase grounds in Percy Warner Park, where wisps of hills emerge from the mist. Brilliant blue skies draw us to the fields along the Harpeth River Greenway, which winds behind Ensworth School. Nashville boasts nearly 100 miles of paved greenways and 75 miles of unpaved trails, offering endless opportunities for exploration. But one particular spot has become a favorite, what I've affectionately dubbed the "short side."
In 2011, when Copper was an energetic puppy and I sought greener spaces to walk him before work, the new section of the Morton Mill Trailhead on the Harpeth Greenway became our go-to. The "long side" of the trail, running alongside the Harpeth River into Edwin Warner Park, was a beautiful route lined with a canopy of trees. We began at the Harpeth Valley Golf Center, which has shared parking with the greenway. One morning, however, the parking area gate was locked. We parked across the street and I followed Copper's lead down an unassuming path in the opposite direction.
As we rounded a gentle bend, a body of water came into view, its surface mirroring a lovely line of trees on the opposite shore. The sound of passing cars on the road faded into the background, and this tucked-away slice of nature felt remarkably peaceful and serene. I was immediately taken by the scene, especially on days when dramatic clouds danced across the sky. I began returning frequently, capturing the changing seasons and marveling at the unexpected beauty of this "short side" of the trail.
When I share photos of this hidden gem with friends, they're always amazed and skeptical, unable to believe it's steps from a golf course. But I know the magic of this place, and I'm happy to share its secret with you.
